Puerto Rican Coffee Earns 92 Points from Coffee Review, Showcasing Island’s Specialty Potential
Utuado, Puerto Rico — In a significant milestone for Puerto Rico’s coffee industry, Fifth Heaven Coffee’s Puerto Rico Medium Roast earned an impressive 92-point rating from Coffee Review in July 2025. This recognition places the coffee among the top-tier offerings in the specialty coffee world and highlights the island’s growing reputation for quality and innovation.
Produced at Hacienda Tierra Viva in Utuado by Laura Rivera and Blake Horwitz, the coffee is crafted from a blend of Limani, Fronton, Bourbon, and Typica Arabica varieties. It is processed using the natural method, where beans are dried inside the whole fruit, and roasted directly on the farm. The result is a cup described as crisply chocolaty and sweetly nut-toned, with tasting notes of baking chocolate, cashew butter, red apple, magnolia, and fresh-cut oak.
Coffee Review’s blind assessment praised the coffee’s briskly sweet acidity, satiny-smooth mouthfeel, and a finish that is chocolaty and sweetly nutty—a profile that reviewers called “classic Puerto Rico.”
Beyond its flavor, the coffee stands out for its regenerative farming practices and pesticide-free cultivation, aligning with global trends toward sustainability and traceability in specialty coffee.
This recognition is a testament to the resilience and innovation of Puerto Rican coffee producers, especially in the wake of challenges like Hurricane Maria. It also signals a bright future for the island’s coffee industry, which continues to gain momentum through public-private partnerships, improved cultivation techniques, and a renewed focus on quality.
